Viwe

Viwe, 30 years old, has been severely visually impaired since childhood as a result of meningitis. Thanks to the support of a major German company based in South Africa, she was able to complete a year-long work placement. At the same time, we accepted her into our Life Journey programme, allowing her to familiarise herself with our projects (including a vegetable farm in Soweto). Now Viwe works in our office three or four days a week.

To allow her to use a computer properly, we installed special software which she can use to, for example, input documents via headphones and digitalise text. She is also studying and performs regular office tasks.

With support behind her, Viwe has taken great strides – she can now handle phone calls, email correspondence and personal visits with ease. She also has big plans for the future: with our help, she is hoping to develop her own business and become even more self-reliant. We are delighted to support her on this journey, and look forward to seeing where it leads her.
